92.12 Protection of Canada’s Ecosystems and National Parks
Whereas:
- Only 3.4% of Canada’s land and water is currently protected from development and resource extraction.
- Section 3 of Canada’s Green Plan sets a goal to protect 12% of Canada’s land.
- In January 1991, the Minister of the Environment announced an action plan for 18 unprotected ecosystems, but this plan has not yet been made public.
- Motion M-330, passed by the House of Commons on June 17, 1991, supports the preservation of at least 12% of Canada’s natural ecosystems.
Resolved:
- The National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC) urges the Government of Canada to:
- Proceed without delay in setting targets, timetables, and maps to protect 12% of Canada’s land as part of the "12% by 2000" campaign.
- Integrate ecological impact assessments into all national park systems to ensure sustainable development.
- The NCWC urges provincial and local Councils of Women to petition their provincial governments to adopt similar protective measures for ecosystems and national parks.
