89.7 Environment

[Whereas,] Rationale:

Canadians are becoming increasingly aware of the importance and vulnerability of all aspects of the environment, and to safeguard the same are demanding immediate action from their elected representatives, as Canada is a land of great environmental diversity and contains areas designated as World Heritage Sites. The Canadian Council of Resource and Environmental Ministers have received the Report of the National Task Force on the Environment and Economy, and the Federal and Provincial Governments have unanimously endorsed this Report in principle.

The education and involvement of all Canadians are of paramount importance so that they can participate, as is their right in a democratic system, in the discussion, policy formulation, review process and decision-making in devising an Environment/Economic Strategy.

[RESOLVED,] NCWC urges the Government of Canada to encourage the continuing involvement of the Canadian public in environmental and economic policy formulation and the review process, according to the recommendations of the national Task Force on Environment and Economy, specifically in environment/economy decision-making, Round Tables and conservation strategies, and by the proclamation of 1990 as the Canadian Year of the Environment.

NCWC would also suggest that the Governor General of Canada and the Lieutenant Governors of each province and territory become Special Patrons of the Environment.
