National Council of
Women of Canada

(NCWC) 1893-2024

An organization of women working together since

1893, advocating for the welfare of women, families, and communities. We focus on raising funds for important projects, increasing awareness among our members about significant issues, and influencing policy by presenting proposals for change. The organization submits briefs and letters and meets in person with government officials at local, provincial, and federal levels to drive meaningful change. Through collaboration, the NCWC empowers women to work together towards these shared goals.

Policies

-President Penny Rankin-

WELCOME!

Since 1893, the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC) has united women in a shared commitment to building a society where safety, security, opportunity, and respect for human rights are realities for women, girls, and indeed all Canadians. Our organization is dedicated to advocating for policies and initiatives that protect and advance the rights and well-being of individuals and families, while also creating pathways for personal and collective growth.

We believe a just and caring society is one where everyone feels safe, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, we tackle critical issues such as equal opportunity, access to healthcare, safe housing, support for vulnerable and marginalized communities and addressing violence in all its forms-—whether physical, emotional, online or systemic. By raising awareness and working directly with policymakers at all levels of government, we strive to bring about meaningful, lasting change.

The challenges before us are complex, but we remain optimistic and determined. Our members work together to ensure the voices of women and girls are heard and their needs prioritized in national conversations.

We invite you to join us as we continue our legacy of leadership and action. Together, we can build a safer, more secure, and inclusive Canada—one where every person has the support and opportunities they need to thrive, free from violence and discrimination. Join us as we shape a future where security, opportunity, and the full realization of rights are shared by all.

To learn more about joining our efforts, please contact us at presncwc@gmail.com. Together, we can shape a more just and equitable Canada for all.

Common Program (2023-2025)

“Housing is a Human Right”

NCWC Councils, Federates and Individual members are invited to invest energy in our Common Program by raising awareness of and advocating for a response to the housing crisis that disproportionately affects women, gender-diverse, and Indigenous populations. Currently, too many Canadian families and individuals pay more than 30% of their income on rent. These families and individuals are increasingly vulnerable to evictions as tenancy laws favour developers and owners.

The issue touches on all aspects of life, and solutions such as social housing that supports affordable habitable renovation and not-for-profit construction, are desperately needed. Solutions are not ideas alone; they must also be implemented. Of increasing concern is the plight of the urban homeless, who lack access to essential services such as water, sanitation, health care and safety.

Do we have policy on all these issues? Where they are lacking, let’s get to work!

I invite members to share their actions along with any resources you find helpful. A current list along with links to our existing policies can be found in the READ MORE tab. I look forward to hearing from you!
