2012:02PU Women, Peace, and Security

Whereas:

  1. The National Council of Women of Canada adopted policy resolutions addressing the protection of women and children from sexual violence in armed conflicts and prosecuting criminals responsible for such war crimes.
  2. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted five resolutions addressing Women, Peace, and Security:
    • #1325 (2000): Acknowledging women’s disproportionate impact by conflict and underrepresentation in peace processes.
    • #1820 (2008): Recognizing sexual violence in conflict as an international peace and security issue.
    • #1888 (2009): Strengthening mechanisms for implementing #1820.
    • #1889 (2009): Addressing obstacles to women’s participation in peace processes.
    • #1960 (2010): Providing accountability for implementing #1820 and #1888, mandating parties credibly suspected of sexual violence to report.
  3. Organizations like UN Women and the Nobel Women’s Initiative have advocated for increased resources and coordinated actions against rape and gender-based violence in conflict.
  4. Canada has supported these efforts and introduced UNSC Resolution #1325.

Resolved:

  1. The National Council of Women of Canada adopts support for UNSC resolutions addressing women’s roles in peacemaking, peace-building, and eliminating gender-based violence, including rape as a weapon of war.
  2. The NCWC urges the Government of Canada to:
    • Advocate for UNSC resolutions addressing Women, Peace, and Security.
    • Join the international community to denounce violence against women and children.
    • Ensure impunity for such crimes is not tolerated.
    • Promote measures to protect women and prevent rape as a weapon of war.
