Promotion of Participation of Canadian Women/ Girls in Soccer and Other Sports

2012:03EI PROMOTION OF THE PARTICIPATION OF CANADIAN WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SOCCER AND OTHER SPORTS

Whereas 1 the Federation Internationale Football Association (FIFA) announced in May 2012 that six Canadian cities will be hosting the Girls’ (2014) and Women’s (2015) World Cups for Soccer; and

Whereas 2 these events present an ideal opportunity to promote the participation of women and girls in soccer; and

Whereas 3 young women who participate in sport are more likely to maintain a healthy lifestyle and develop strong personal, social, and workplace skills; and

Whereas 4 historically women’s and girls’ sports have received less financial support than men’s and boys’; and

Whereas 5 Canadian Heritage’s sport policy, Actively Engaged: A Policy on Sport for Women and Girls, commits to greater gender equity and the provision of supports for their participation; therefore be it

Resolved 1 that the National Council of Women of Canada adopt as policy support for the promotion of women and girls in sport; and be it further

Resolved 2 that the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to use the hosting of the Girls’ (2014) and Women’s (2015) World Cups for Soccer as an opportunity to promote the participation of women and girls in soccer and other relevant sports events by providing a special targeted fund available to provinces and territories; and be it further

Resolved 3 that the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to promote the participation of women and girls in sports by providing special targeted funding available to provinces and territories; and be it further

Resolved 4 that the National Council of Women of Canada urge the International Council of Women to promote among its federates the participation of women and girls in sports, in particular the Girls’ (2014) and Women’s (2015) World Cups for Soccer.
