2023-02 Addressing the Impact of Unintended Pregnancies on Women and Adolescent Girls

Whereas:

  1. The UN reported a global population of 8 billion on November 15, 2022, with an estimated 67 million annual increase.
  2. Worldwide, 52% of pregnancies were unintended, including 42% in Canada; 60% of these ended in abortion, with 45% being unsafe, leading to maternal deaths and hospitalizations.
  3. In 2021, 13.3 million babies (10% of global births) were born to mothers under 20.
  4. Unintended adolescent pregnancies negatively impact young women’s education, health, and opportunities, often forcing them into early marriage.
  5. Unintended pregnancies reflect gender inequality and control over women’s bodies, amplifying social and economic harm.
