Urban Transit 91.9

91.9 Urban Transit

[Whereas,] Rationale:

The Government of Canada has recognized the importance of reduced air pollution and has initiated a program to reduce air pollution levels significantly in the next decade. However, the Government does not currently assist financially in the provision of urban transit. Transportation is one of the largest sources of air pollution, with automobiles the predominant source of polluting emissions.

Public transit is the most efficient and environmentally sound method of moving large volumes of people in urban areas. At present, existing transit services operate at capacity at peak hours in major cities. Additional funding is required to increase levels of service so that additional riders can be accommodated.

[RESOLVED,] NCWC urges the Government of Canada to place a high priority on encouraging greater use of public transportation in its initiatives aimed at reducing pollution.
