80.6 Restriction on the Use of Social Insurance Numbers
Whereas, The Social Insurance Number was introduced by the Canadian government to facilitate the administration of Income Tax, Pension, and Unemployment records;
Whereas, There is a growing trend among government departments, businesses, and private organizations to require individuals to divulge their Social Insurance Number for identification;
Whereas, Such a requirement violates a person’s rights; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the National Council of Women of Canada requests the Government of Canada to enact legislation making it an offence to require the divulgence of a person’s Social Insurance Number, except where disclosure is legally mandated by law.
