Radiation Doses

91.14EM Radiation Dose Resolution

Whereas, Radiation doses permitted to be public were set by referring to the amount of radiation from bombs dropped in the last war; and,

Whereas, Recently, the estimated doses of radiation received by the bomb victims have been reduced. This means that a smaller amount of radiation than had been assumed caused all the damage at Hiroshima and Nagasaki; and,

Whereas, This new information shows present permissible doses are dangerously high; and,

Whereas, World regulatory agencies are scrambling to reduce allowable radiation levels to nuclear industry workers and the public; and,

Whereas, The United Nations International Commission for Radiological Protection (ICRP) has set safer limits for nuclear workers and its limits for the public are one millisievert per year. (Down from five millisieverts per year in Canada);

Whereas, These improved limits will result in better protection for our health; therefore, be it,

RESOLVED, That The National Council of Women of Canada endorse the ICRP recommended radiation levels for Canada; and be it further,

RESOLVED, That The National Council of Women of Canada urge the National Government to require our Atomic Energy Control Board adopt the ICRP’s recommended radiation levels for Canadian Nuclear workers and the public.
