Appraisal of Military Strength

84.5 Appraisal Military Strength

Whereas

  • The people of Canada desire peace, and in the present world situation, it appears that peace can only be attained through security made possible by military preparedness.
  • Canada’s security threats have increased significantly since the publication of the 1971 White Paper on Defence.
  • The Special Senate Sub-Committee on National Defence reports that Canada lacks the minimum military strength to meet peacetime obligations, alliance commitments, or conduct wartime tasks effectively.
  • The military does not prioritize maintaining a properly equipped force with a supporting defence industry.

Resolved

That the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC) urge the Government of Canada to:

  1. Develop a new policy or statement of purpose outlining clear objectives for Canada’s military forces.
  2. Ensure that manpower and resources required for Canada’s peacetime obligations, alliances, and military tasks are provided according to a set timetable.
