2003:05 LOW FREQUENCY ACTIVE SONAR SYSTEMS

Whereas:

Low Frequency Active Sonar Systems (LFASS) used in marine environments have significant deleterious effects on aquatic organisms, particularly whales and other marine mammals by interfering with essential life elements such as breeding, migration, feeding, and caring for offspring, up to the point of causing death; and

Whereas:

The United States Navy is known to be developing and testing and/or using LFASS for the purpose of war and these systems are capable of affecting eighty (80) percent of the world’s oceans; and

Whereas:

The United States Navy has access to the waters off the coast of British Columbia and to certain ports along the coast of British Columbia, as well as other Canadian coastal ports; therefore be it

RESOLVED:

That the National Council of Women of Canada adopt as its policy opposition to the testing and/or use of Low Frequency Active Sonar Systems in any Canadian marine environment or any waters where it would have a deleterious effect on whales and other marine animals; and be it further

RESOLVED:

That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to ban the testing and/or use of Low Frequency Active Sonar Systems in any Canadian marine environment or any waters where it would have a deleterious effect on whales and other marine animals; and be it further

RESOLVED:

That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the International Council of Women to adopt as its policy a ban on the testing and/or use of Low Frequency Active Sonar Systems in any marine environment, or any waters where it would have a deleterious effect on whales and other marine animals; and be it further

RESOLVED:

That the International Council of Women request its member Councils to urge their governments to adopt as policy a ban on the testing and/or use of Low Frequency Active Sonar Systems in any marine environment, or any waters where it would have a deleterious effect on whales and other marine animals.
