93.13RU Reiteration and Update of Existing Policy: International Law of the Sea

Whereas, In 1982, the Convention of the Law of the Sea, an international document, was signed by 119 countries, including Canada.

This Convention involved a two-step process, with ratification as the second step. 60 ratifications are necessary before the Convention comes into force, but so far, only 53 nations have ratified the document. Canada is not one of the 53.

The National Council of Women first approved a resolution urging the government to expedite ratification of the document in 1987.

Resolved, The National Council of Women of Canada urges the Government of Canada to take the necessary steps to ratify the International Law of the Sea and to urge other governments to do the same, in order to reach the 60 signatures required for the Law of the Sea to come into force.
