79.5 Safety Closures for Hazardous Products

Whereas, Statistics compiled by the Poison Control of the Department of Health and Welfare show that 53,955 cases of poisonings occurred in Canada in 1975;

Whereas, Consumer and Corporate Affairs information shows that over 16,000 poisonings are caused by household products, with children under four years old the main victims; and,

Whereas, Child-resistant packaging requirements under the Hazardous Products Act do not include all dangerous chemicals;

therefore be it,

RESOLVED, That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada:

  1. To ensure that regulations are developed under the Hazardous Products Act to extend child-resistant packaging requirements to all dangerous household chemicals; and,
  2. To intensify efforts to inform the public regarding the dangers to children of many household products in common use.
