2012:06PU ELECTRICITY FROM GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Whereas 1 the National Council of Women of Canada policy has supported alternative and renewable forms of energy in previous resolutions:
a. #75.12, which asked the Government of Canada to give priority to research into the development of solar energy;
b. #80.10 on the conservation of natural resources and development of renewable energy sources;
c. #89.4 which called for a program of public awareness, reduction of consumption, and restoration of funding for conservation and alternative energy programs;
d. #91.8 which asked for a Commission to promote use of renewable and alternative sources of energy and encouragement of experimental projects and research;
e. #96.3 which encouraged the use of ethanol blended fuels; but has not yet focused on electricity from geothermal energy; and
Whereas 2 Geothermal energy is already being used in the production of electrical power in many other countries, including Indonesia, New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines and the United States; and
Whereas 3 Geothermal energy, not yet developed in Canada, is non-polluting, relatively easy to process, of almost infinite supply, and known to be available in Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories; therefore be it
Resolved 1 that the National Council of Women of Canada adopt as additional alternative energy policy that geothermal energy be explored in Canada to help meet our electricity needs; and be it further
Resolved 2 that the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to give high priority to exploring the use of geothermal energy for electricity.
