Disarmament (1982) Policy Update

89.10PU Update on Policy: Disarmament (1982)

[Whereas,] Rationale: Chemical weapons was at the top of the agenda of the 43rd General Assembly of the United Nations in October, 1988. “We must have an agreement that covers production and stockpiling,” said Douglas Roche, “Canada’s disarmament ambassador and head of the General Assembly’s First Committee on arms control and security issues.” “The erosion of the 1925 treaty can’t be allowed to continue.”

[RESOLVED,] NCWC reaffirms its dedication to peace and to the development of procedures to resolve conflicts by peaceful means. NCWC urges the Government of Canada:

1) To continue its efforts to bring about a balanced nuclear and conventional arms limitation through specific and verifiable agreements, which include all states at risk of military confrontations;

2) To strongly promote and support an international convention banning production, stockpiling and transfer of chemical weapons.
