91.12PU Canadian Broadcasting
[Whereas,] Rationale: NCWC has had a long history of support for public broadcasting in Canada. In 1987, the NCWC brief outlined its concern for Canadian broadcasting as a whole. It believes that Canada needs a unifying national system of communication to preserve Canadian autonomy and sovereignty, and to maintain and develop Canadian culture. Substantial reductions in the CBC budget have forced the corporation to cut services, and further cuts could jeopardize its ability to fulfil its mandate. The cutbacks made in 1991 which have resulted in the closing or curtailment of 11 stations has impaired the corporation’s ability to fulfil its mandate of serving different areas of the country as outlined in the Broadcast Act.
[RESOLVED,] NCWC urges the Government of Canada to ensure that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) received sufficient funding to fulfil its mandate as outlined in the Broadcast Act.
