Netpen Aquaculture (Fish Farms)

2002:06EM NETPEN AQUACULTURE (FISH FARMS)

Whereas: The Government of British Columbia, as well as the Government of Canada, have had a moratorium on the proliferation of Salmon Net Pen Aquaculture in British Columbia; and

Whereas: The Fish and Wildlife Departments have threatened to lift the moratorium on Salmon Netpen Aquaculture and are likely to do so at any time for economic reasons; and

Whereas: Salmon Netpen Aquaculture has been scientifically proven to damage the wild salmon stock as well as the wild crustacean stock and ocean mammals and may also impact on human consumers of both farmed salmon and any wild salmon which have ingested the feed and other additives which drain from the net pens of the salmon farms; and

Whereas: Provincial and Federal Governments have done numerous studies which have clearly shown that netpen aquaculture is dangerous to wild marine life and to human health; therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the National Council of Women of Canada adopt as policy that all fish farms be safe, land-based, closed-loop containment systems with proper waste management; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to maintain the moratorium on net pen aquaculture and ensure that fish farms be converted to safe, land-based, closed-loop containment systems with proper waste management.
