83.7 Education Program re: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Whereas, Recent research indicates that the human fetus can be irreparably damaged by the consumption of alcohol (even in small quantities) by the pregnant woman; and,

Whereas, Further damage to the child can take place during the period of nursing due to the mother’s alcohol consumption; and,

Whereas, In addition to the emotional strain on the family, the costs to educate and support these physically and mentally handicapped children are significant; therefore,

RESOLVED, That The National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to pursue an educational program to make the public aware of the problem of fetal alcohol syndrome and its obvious solution—prevention; and be it further,

RESOLVED, That The National Council of Women of Canada urge the Provincial Councils of Women to request their respective Provincial governments to emphasize an educational program on fetal alcohol syndrome.
