Volunteer participation transforms good intentions into collective power, giving our vision for a better society both strength and direction.
The National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC) marks the International Year of the Volunteer and the beginning of National Volunteer Week by recognizing the essential role volunteers play in shaping a just, inclusive, and resilient society. Volunteerism is not only an act of service—it is a form of civic participation that strengthens democracy and advances the public good. Across Canada, volunteers contribute to progress in critical areas including health, education, economic security, environmental sustainability, and justice. Their work, and OUR WORK supports communities while also amplifying voices, addressing inequities, and driving meaningful change.
Volunteering also offers significant benefits to individuals. It fosters leadership, builds practical skills, and enhances professional development through valuable experience that strengthens a curriculum vitae. Just as importantly, it cultivates connection, purpose, and a deeper understanding of the issues shaping our society.
At NCWC, we emphasize that volunteerism carries both respect and responsibility—respect for diverse communities and perspectives, and a responsibility to act with integrity, inclusion, and informed commitment.
Through engagement with NCWC and our network of Local and Provincial Councils, individuals are empowered to pursue their passions—whether in health, economics, education, the environment, or social justice—while also gaining insight into the broader policy landscape. This interconnected approach equips volunteers not only to serve, but to advocate effectively for systemic change.
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week and our many volunteers across the country, we salute your participation- each event attended, every resolution proposed and ultimately action taken are vital. By investing our time and voices, we strengthen both our communities and our democracy.
