Acknowledging the global growth in highly profitable illegal activities involving the trafficking or smuggling of persons,
Recognizing that such activities are prompted by greed based on the exploitation of human needs, through deceit or fraud, without regard to the misery inflicted on victims,
Recognizing that transnational organized crime is a growing problem for all countries and that countries cannot combat this criminal activity individually,
Acknowledging the need for the introduction in 2000 of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocols to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children and Against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air,
Aware that the prevention of such activities requires urgent international action and that the co-operation envisaged in the Convention and its Protocols cannot be effective without ratification by at least 40 state parties,
THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN CALLS ON ITS NATIONAL COUNCILS TO
Urge their Governments to support and ratify the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocols to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children and against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air.
