Revisions to Canadian Bill of Rights

67.6 Revisions to Canadian Bill of Rights

Whereas:

  • The Canadian Bill of Rights has not been applied as effectively by the judiciary as its framers had forecast; and
  • This is partly due to the fact that it is not entrenched and has some drafting defects; and
  • 1968 has been proclaimed by the United Nations as International Human Rights Year; and
  • Canada's Centennial Year provides an excellent opportunity to improve the climate for the promotion of civil liberties;

Resolved:

That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to appoint a special committee of constitutional experts to revise the Canadian Bill of Rights to make it more effective and to study other measures for the better protection of civil liberties.
