67.4 Resolution Concerning the Population Explosion
Whereas, The great concern the world over is the quality of life in which the children of today may be prepared to participate; and,
Whereas, The quality of life can only be enriched if the standard of living is substantially above a subsistence level; and,
Whereas, Two-thirds of the world's population lives in the developing areas where the average standard of living is at subsistence level or lower; and,
Whereas, High birth rates contribute to slow economic development and to lack of improvement in living standards; and,
Whereas, An imbalance between economic development and population growth has in the past led to famine, pestilence, and war; and,
Whereas, Sweden, Japan, and the United States have begun to direct large portions of their foreign aid towards co-operation with other less privileged governments on their family planning programs; therefore,
RESOLVED, That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada:
- To include family planning assistance to requesting countries through our own External Aid programs; and,
- To influence members of the United Nations General Assembly and United Nations agencies to accord the problem of world population stabilization the priority it urgently requires by:
a. Sponsoring research programs, and
b. Providing technical and capital assistance to those countries requesting such assistance for their family planning programs.
