Toward a New Relationship Between Aboriginal Peoples and Other Canadians

97.6 Toward A New Relationship Between Aboriginal Peoples And Other Canadians

Whereas, a new dispute resolution process between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians is essential as present and past procedures have been unsuccessful and far too many Aboriginals continue to live under unacceptable economic and social conditions; and

Whereas, any new procedure must not be from a sense of guilt but be constructive recognizing fully the rights of the Aboriginal People, and based on a sense of respect for the Aboriginal way of life, and a desire to see that the Aboriginal people have an opportunity to preserve their culture while enjoying a decent standard of living, and to participate fully in the economic and political life of Canada; and

Whereas, there is a great deal of uncertainty and dispute throughout Canada concerning the said traditional and treaty rights; and

Whereas, the Government of Canada has failed to take action on the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples; therefore, be it

Resolved, that the National Council of Women urge the Government of Canada to study the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and undertake appropriate action using a conciliatory process to create a new and better relationship between the Government of Canada and Aboriginal Peoples.
