Expressing concern that the 1990 Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, which came into force in 2003, is at present ratified by only 46 States
Noting that migrants in many parts of the world face severe human rights abuses
Noting that women increasingly migrate alone to enter the global labour market
Acknowledging these women are often the primary earners for the family they leave behind
Noting that migration can be an empowering experience for women but at the same time can have the opposite effect. They can be particularly vulnerable to exploitation and social isolation
Expressing concern that many countries have not yet ratified the convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families and the ILO Conventions,
THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN calls upon all affiliated National Councils to urge their governments to ratify the Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families and the ILO Conventions.
