Food and Drinkable Water for Older People Suffering Poverty, Isolation, and Situation of Armed Conflicts

Considering the strong increase in the ageing of population in many countries,


Recognizing that the number of older people living alone has increased due to the weakening of traditional family structures,


Referring to the armed conflicts in Africa and in other continents where people, including older persons and refugees, die of hunger and thirst,


Referring to the heat wave of August 2003 in Europe, during which thousands of isolated older persons died through lack of food and drink,


Recalling the UN-Principles for Older Persons - Resolution 46/91 of 16 December 1991,


The International Council of Women urges its affiliated National Councils to press their governments and competent authorities to:


1. Provide enough food and drinking water for older persons living on their own during times of extreme heat and cold, and


2. Provide enough food and drinking water for refugees, including the elderly.
