Considering the recent and important progress of science in matters of genetics;
Fearing the dangers of a genetic genus unbridled and out of control;
Recalling the ICW resolution adopted in Ottawa on the Human genome and the Rights of the Human Person;
THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN Urges the National Councils to bring to the attention of their governments and competent authorities the necessity:
1. To manage biotechnologies by effective and humane rules and in conformity with human rights especially in matters of cloning;
2. To forbid the use of an individual's genetic code without his/her consent and in particular to reject all arrangements aimed at using genetic criteria as a requirement in order to have access to employment;
3. to ensure that within the framework of international cooperation, developing countries should engage in and participate in research into human biology and genetics, taking into account their own specific problems.
