91.8 Renewable Sources of Energy
[Whereas,] Rationale:
Environmental damage occurs from the burning of fossil fuels and sometimes from the building of hydroelectric dams. In addition, it has not yet been satisfactorily proven that nuclear power is a safe energy option, both in the production of nuclear energy and in the disposal of radioactive waste. Some communities in Canada are isolated because of the expense of the transmission of energy, thereby necessitating the burning of expensive fossil fuels to provide electrical power and communication links. Other efficient and environmentally safe energy sources are available. Implementation of these, along with a stronger emphasis on energy conservation, will contribute to solving the global warming problem.
[RESOLVED,] NCWC urges the Government of Canada to establish an Alternative Energy Commission to promote the use of renewable and alternative sources of energy by encouraging and supporting further experimental projects and research by accredited agencies.
