83.12 Female Students and New Technology

Whereas Accelerated change resulting from advances in Science and Technology is affecting many aspects of adult life, such as workplace, home-management, child-rearing, health and aging, leisure and travel; and,

Whereas To cope optimally in the new technology, competence in mathematics, physics, and other sciences is required; and,

Whereas A change of attitude toward a female’s ability to master science and technology is necessary and important;

Resolved, That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to:

  1. Design and implement a public relations program aimed at informing parents about the changing workplace and the kinds of opportunities for which their daughters, as well as their sons, should be encouraged to prepare;
  2. Promote and facilitate the participation of young female public servants employed at any level of scientific or technological job in school career-related programs to provide role models, particularly for female students;
  3. Offer through Canada Manpower Centre events for school students on the theme of various “Career cluster” and lifestyle choices, and the educational requirements;
  4. Offer encouragement and expertise to Provincial Ministers of Education (as well as to industry associations and councils) to acknowledge the progress already made to hasten action and to mitigate the effect of withdrawal of scarce dollars;

Resolved, That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Provincial Councils of Women to urge their respective governments to implement programs of affirmative action in education and technological employment;

Resolved, That the National Council of Women of Canada request the Provincial Councils of Women to urge their respective governments to require Guidance Counsellors to direct female students’ attention to a wide range of opportunities in technical and technological fields.
