97.8 Regulations Regarding Tobacco Products

Whereas, the decision of the Supreme Court of Canada to strike down the key provisions of the Tobacco Control Act (Sept. 21, 1995);

and,

Whereas, the use of Tobacco Products remains the major cause of preventable deaths;

and,

Whereas, measures are needed to reduce the use of tobacco (and preventable deaths);

therefore, be it

Resolved, that the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to:

  1. Designate tobacco products as health hazardous materials which are addictive in nature (regulated by the Food and Drug Act or the Hazardous Products Act);
    and,
  2. Protect youth from the pressures of advertising campaigns by tobacco companies through appropriate regulation;
    and,
  3. Institute legislation that would protect non-smokers from tobacco smoke;
    and,
  4. Recover prenatal education costs and medical costs of treating tobacco-related illnesses from tobacco companies, through additional taxes and/or heavy fines.
