97.5 Nuclear Weapons - Abolition 2000
Whereas, The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that the threat or use of nuclear weapons would be contrary to International Law and the principles of humanitarian law; and,
Whereas, Development of nuclear weapons continues; and,
Whereas, The Canberra Commission on the elimination of nuclear weapons, established by the Australian Government, has proposed practical steps towards a nuclear-free world; and,
Whereas, More than 15,000 nuclear weapons remain deployed or in storage; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to use its influence within the United Nations to encourage the acceptance before the year 2000, of a Convention which sets out a binding timetable for the abolition of all nuclear weapons in the world.
