82.14EM Emergency Resolution: Nuclear Proliferation and Sale of CANDU and Fuel

Whereas, CANDU reactors and fuel are sold to countries which are non-signatories of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (May 16, 1968); and,

Whereas, Canada has nuclear scientists and technicians working on CANDU reactors in countries which are non-signatories of the Non-Proliferation Treaty; and,

Whereas, The enrichment plants under construction could be used to produce high-grade plutonium 238 and 239, which have a potential to be used in other types of reactors or to manufacture atomic weapons; and,

Whereas, The greatest environmental issue facing us is nuclear annihilation; be it,

RESOLVED, That the National Council of Women of Canada urge the Government of Canada to halt the promotion and sale of CANDU reactors, nuclear fuel, and nuclear technology to those countries which are non-signatories of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (May 16, 1968).
